Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Greater Nottingham Diabetic Eye Screening Programme for a secondment or fixed term contract until end of March 2023 for a band 6 Patient Engagement Lead . The post is part time for 30 hours per week based at the Ropewalk House campus of Nottingham University Hospitals, located in Nottingham City Centre.

You should be able to work both as part of a team and independently and present excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all stakeholders and within a multidisciplinary team. You will be responsible for developing and leading the programmes patient engagement with a specific aim to reduce health inequalities and to improve patient access within the Greater Nottingham Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

Applicants must demonstrate excellent planning and organisational skills along with a sound analytical and strategic approach to their work. Applicants should be be confident in decision making and effective problem solving, we encourage you to speak up regarding new ideas and support development. Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage and develop the programmes health inequalities work, within defined measurable targets.

They will be required to actively seek out and engage with different patient groups.

The job role will incorporate identifying vulnerable patient and health inequalities.

The post holder will be required perform analysis of data, formulate and deliver measurable actions and report to stakeholders.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The aim of Greater Nottingham Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is to reduce the risk of sight loss amongst people living with diabetes by the prompt identification and effective treatment if necessary, of sight threatening diabetic retinopathy, at the appropriate stage during the disease process.

To work to reducing health inequalities between patients, both in terms of access to services, and health outcome.

To lead the screening programmes in new and established engagement strategies and projects to ensure service equality in a wide diversity of patient cohorts, especially hard to reach groups.

To engage with Diabetic patients associated with inequalities and poor uptake in screening, with a view to raising awareness in these groups and promoting uptake in order to reduce sight threatening eye disease.

To analyse healthcare data and devise strategies and actions to improve screening outcomes and reduce risks of sight threatening eye disease as a result.

Equality and diversity/addressing inequalities

  • Make every effort to maximise the offer and uptake of screening in vulnerable/hard-to-reach populations (including those who are not registered with a GP as well as the armed force service personnel), within the resources
  • Take a systematic approach to identifying and addressing screening inequalities by conducting an ongoing health equity audit (HEA) that includes equality characteristics, socioeconomic factors, local vulnerable populations and geographical variation
  • Deliver the service in a way that addresses local health inequalities, tailoring and targeting interventions when necessary
  • Deliver the service in a culturally sensitive way to meet the needs of local diverse populations
  • Involve service users in developing and evaluating the service
  • Apply high levels of diligence when considering excluding people with protected characteristics from screening and follow equality, health inequality and screening guidance when making such decisions

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of Diabetic Eye Screening Programme and quality assurance national standards.
  • Educated to post graduate degree level or equivalent experience.

Desirable criteria

  • Completed the level 3 Diploma in Diabetic Retinopathy screening
  • Relevant experience in a Diabetic Eye Screening, Public Health or Communications setting.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work within a team and independently, including multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrable experience of writing reports and procedures
  • Exceptional communication regarding patient care
  • Ability to communicate with staff and patients who have experienced sensory loss i.e. hearing or visual impaired
  • Able to deal with conflict and manage difficult conversations effectively
  • Sound Knowledge of Social media and digital communication.
  • Communicates with people at all levels. Disseminates procedural information to staff and patients.
