Job Description

Department Overview:

A research team consisting of Dr. Jonathan Pruneda and Dr. Ruth Napier are seeking a Research Assistant 2 that can provide a full range of support, with general supervision, on a research project using protein biochemistry, high-throughput screening, and cell culture assays. The team studies the rare pediatric neurodegenerative disease, UBA5. Specifically, we aim to develop, employ, and validate a high-throughput drug screen that can correct for rare, loss-of-function mutations in the UBA5 gene that are linked to human disease.

The ideal candidate must be highly enthusiastic about conducting cross-disciplinary research with a diverse team of researchers focused on drug discovery for children suffering from UBA5. The candidate must be able to prioritize a variety of projects, able to work effectively with the principal investigators and other members of the laboratories, and able to independently solve problems.

Duties include molecular biology (gene cloning, sequencing); biochemistry (protein expression & purification, biochemical assays, Western blotting); cell culture (maintenance & passage of tissue culture cell lines); small molecule drug screening/testing. Other duties include basic laboratory management, such as ordering materials and supplies as needed, and maintenance of records and inventory.

Function/Duties of Position:

• Work independently on projects using molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture techniques. Duties include molecular biology (gene cloning, sequencing); biochemistry (protein expression & purification, biochemical assays, Western blotting); cell culture (maintenance & passage of tissue culture cell lines).
• Ordering materials and supplies as needed, inventory and record keeping
• Contribute to manuscript preparation, participate in lab and research group meetings.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor »s in relevant field; OR
• Associate »s AND 3 years of relevant experience; OR
• 4 years of relevant experience; OR
• Equivalent combination of training and experience
• Must be organized, motivated, and capable of learning and following scientific protocols and working independently and with a team. Strong communication and oral presentation skills required.
• Duties include molecular biology (gene cloning, sequencing); biochemistry (protein expression & purification, biochemical assays, Western blotting); cell culture (maintenance & passage of tissue culture cell lines).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field of study.
• Working knowledge of basic lab techniques required.
• 1-3 years of experience in molecular biology or biochemistry preferred.
• Priority will be given to candidates with previous research experience.
• Previous experience in biochemistry or molecular biology, and experience leading portions of an independent research project preferred.

Additional Details:

Working Conditions: Work is generally 40 hours per week during normal working hours, however, some evening and weekend work is necessary on occasion. Additional safety training may be required to work within a BSL-2 environment.

Physical Demands & Equipment Usage: Personnel will need to work at lab benches, desks and/or microscopes for up to 4 hours at a time. Some standing required – for up to 2 hours at a time. Ability to perform repetitive lab manipulations, move lab equipment under 25 lbs with accommodation, perform image analysis operation and help others with equipment use. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required. (Gloves, mask/respirator, eyewear, lab coat, etc).
