Now in its fourth year, the Hub is supporting precarious and marginalised people to claim their rights to health and build government accountability and capacity to provide them with security and services. ARISE provides an exciting opportunity for research that puts marginalised peoples’ priorities and capacities at the heart of urban development. It brings together ten partners from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines who are working in Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Kenya and India with disadvantaged people in informal settlements

The Role:

The successful Senior Research Associate will have experience of working with research partners in sub-Saharan Africa and/or South-central Asia, particularly within a multi-country research consortia model. You will support the ongoing social science research agenda, design and conduct of empirical research and uptake activities, and foster inter-disciplinary collaboration across the Hub. Primarily, you will contribute towards the following key objectives:

  • Lead on the ongoing design and implementation of the social science and participatory research elements of the ARISE portfolio as part of a team
  • Conduct high quality qualitative and participatory research in collaboration with ARISE partners to inform the development and evaluation of approaches to improve accountability for health and well-being in urban informal settlements
  • Produce reports, papers, and other documentation to communicate research findings to a wider audience, in collaboration with ARISE partner institutions
  • Lead development of new research funding proposals on health, well-being, and accountability in urban informal settlements in collaboration with ARISE partner institutions

The Candidate:

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format. Ideally, you will be able to demonstrate your CV and application a combination of the below:

  • PhD in e.g., public health, development studies, sociology, anthropology, human geography
  • Understanding of health issues, services and systems in Low and Middle-Income countries (LMICs)
  • Understanding of social determinants of health, and theories of intersectional inequity including gender, class, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation etc.
  • Training at doctoral level in qualitative research methods, including study design, data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Experience of planning and designing qualitative and participatory research projects in LMICs, including research ethics submissions
  • Experience of using participatory methodology in LMICs
  • Excellent organisational skills, especially setting priorities, managing time, attention to detail and working to and meeting deadlines
