Job Description
Who are we?
Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km of pipes, keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing.
At Thames Water, every one of our actions, big and small, matters every day. Water is essential to life, so our business is always open.
What is the purpose of this role?
Our overarching plan is to provide our customers with a continuous supply of safe, clean and palatable drinking water – by focusing on our five key priorities – our people, health & safety, water quality, risk & resilience, and efficiency.
As part of the West Thames Valley water production operations team you will work across water production sites in Swindon, Cotswolds and Oxfordshire. As this role covers a large geographical patch, a willingness to move around day to day is essential.
You will be a technically competent person in water processes and water production operations who manages significant risks all the way through the business process through to project completion. You will be representing the production team throughout this process, which requires scoping, design, delivery and commissioning. You will be experienced with water production assets and have knowledge of a wide range of assets from boreholes, water treatment works and storage reservoirs. Key to the role is collaboration and stakeholder engagement, both within and outside of Water Production
You will also be required to take part in an out of hours rota once fully trained.
What you will be doing:
- Technical Competence: Continuously develops and maintains operational expertise in an area/and or across certain asset types, and can work to tight timescales with multiple stakeholders to deliver projects on time and within scope.
- Capital Delivery Interface: Responsible for ensuring projects progress through the project stage gates, by effective liaison with the relevant teams (asset management, project definition, operations and capital delivery) to ensure that the projects are delivered to time and within scope. Supporting facilitation of all projects (either delivered directly or through the area operations teams) including permitting, outage management and team engagement
- Risk Management: owns the risk management process for an area, supporting the identification of risks (and optimisation opportunities) and then ensuring that the Asset Planning System (APS) is up-to-date, fully populated and provides a representative view of risk for the area operations team at all times; interfacing with Operational Excellence (OpEx) in Water Production and the Asset Management team for in-AMP planning and support for future AMP investment needs.
- Process Assurance: provide process assurance to the production teams through application of appropriate methods to test, review and support improvements to drinking water and environmental regulatory compliance; assisting with investigations of process non-compliances (waivers) or incidents, including disinfection incidents.
- Audits: provide technical support for DWSPAs, DWI and Hazrev to ensure actions are translated onto APS and resolved in a timely fashion.
- Incident Management: provide incident response in and out of hours including running emergency exercises and contributing to a learning environment through updating operating procedures where required.
- Commercial Acumen: Appreciation of Opex targets and budgets in the area and how project delivery impacts on financial risk. Identifies and leads changes to improve asset compliance and value for money.
- Health and Safety: supporting the maintenance of statutory compliance in the area i.e. permits and H&S inspections
We would also welcome applicants who are in the process of working towards the key competencies such as MOWP and IOSH – there is good capacity within the role to expand your skill set.
We’re looking for you to:
- You will have strong Process Competence – including Management of Water Production (MoWP) and Management of Disinfection and extensive practical operational experience.
- Good understanding of the risk management process and interactions with Asset Management.
