Job Description

Overview:

The SDSU School of Nursing consists of one school with 2 locations (San Diego and Imperial Valley). Imperial Valley has pre-licensure students in the Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science degree program that cross enroll while in the Associate Degree Registered Nurse program at Imperial Valley College and then finish the bachelor »s degree after licensure. In addition, there are BSN-transfer and freshmen students admitted directly into the School of Nursing program.
The Academic Advisor serves as a staff member in the School of Nursing assigned to the Imperial Valley campus. Under general supervision, the position provides individual and group information and advising for a student population of approximately 200 undergradutes in the BSN and RN-BS in Nursing program, and participates as a team member within the School of Nursing to support Coordinated Care Advising and Student Success.

Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for the academic advising/mentoring of an assigned caseload of prospective and current students within the SDSU Imperial Valley School of Nursing. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Nursing (Imperial Valley) and the Director of the School of Nursing, the position will advise prospective and admitted students through individual appointments, group advising sessions, via Zoom, in -person, over the telephone, and by email. In addition, the position will counsel academically at-risk students and those not making progress towards degree to identify possible solutions and make referrals to appropriate College and campus resources.
  • The position is an integral part of the School of Nursing and will work with School of Nursing, College of Health and Human Services and SDSU Imperial Valley Student Affairs to provide nursing student advising within SDSU systems and as part of the HCAI Song Brown project.
  • The position requires creating documents and systems to implement and evaluate advising/mentoring of prospective and admitted nursing students.
  • The position requires gaining competency with SDSU related student advising systems.
  • The position requires participation in various student affairs related meetings/trainings.
  • The position will require a combination of teleworking, travel between various San Diego campuses (Brawley, Calexico, San Diego), the SDSU IV RISE Center (El Centro), Imperial Valley College, and as needed for events within Imperial County.
  • Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
  • The position will serve at the discretion of the School of Nursing Director and Associate Director as needed in relation to academic advising.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualification & Education
  • Bachelor »s degree and/or equivalent training and administration work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in office or administrative environment

  • Must maintain confidentiality of student information and records
  • Flexibility to carry out day-to-day assignments without immediate direction
  • Experience with individual and group mentoring
