An exciting opportunity has become available within the Complications of Excess Weight service at Nottingham Children »s Hospital.

The NHS has committed in the Long-Term Plan to improving care for children and young people with complications related to severe obesity. In the East Midlands 2.5% of reception and 4.7% of year 6 children are severely obese. NHS England have commissioned specialist “Complications related to Excess Weight” (CEW) clinics across the country.

In the East Midlands, this clinic is based in Leicester and Nottingham with regional spokes covering the East Midlands. The multi-disciplinary team comprises of consultant paediatric endocrinologists, a specialist nurse, dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, clinical support workers and administrative staff. This is an exciting role to help establish this new service in the East Midlands region.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as a member of a team providing a high quality service to children and young people with severe obesity and related complications. You will keep in close contact with patients, their families and others involved in day-to-day care. You will offer support and advice (under supervision) to optimise the management of patients’ weights and related complications and their physical, psychological, intellectual, educational and social development.

Assist the CEW Team in fulfilling the day-to-day logistics of the service (e.g. clerical support, follow-up of patients by phone/text/email and updating of databases).

Support the maintenance of a robust framework that meets the needs of children and young people with severe obesity.

To assist in the development of health promotion and education materials in conjunction with other healthcare professionals ensuring that all patient care within the multi-disciplinary team is based on the best available evidence.

Be an accessible, approachable member of the team as a first point of contact for patient and families.

Education

Essential criteria

  • NVQ Level 2 Standard in health (or willing to work towards in a given time frame)
  • Level 2 literacy and numeracy or GCSE Mathematics grade C or above
  • Care Certificate
  • Evidence of ongoing personal professional development

Desirable criteria

  • GCSE in English

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience of working with different members of the MDT
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Support Worker
  • Two years’ experience as a Health Care Assistant in paediatrics

Desirable criteria

  • Computer literate

Skills/Ability

  • Good verbal communication /teaching skills to facilitate delivery of education effectively
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication when giving advice to patients and their carers
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Good written communication skills to produce accurate patient records
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when dealing when patients/carers and other health professionals
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to assist in the learning of others

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service – I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
