Job overview

The Optometry Clinical Lead role at Nottingham University Hospitals will provide an opportunity to lead a growing team of Optometrists delivering both core and extended role working and evidence of previous successful leadership is essential. Ongoing opportunities for the non-medical professions in the delivery of ophthalmology services is part of the national agenda and it is vital the post holder is able to influence the direction of travel for Optometrists within the scope of wider service delivery. Optometrists form a key part of the multi-disciplinary team and sub-speciality involvement at NUH includes paediatrics, cornea, medical retina, eye casualty, glaucoma and diabetic virtual clinic review.

Extensive clinical experience in a range of extended roles together with experience in operational management and the ability to provide clear professional leadership is essential. Teaching, pre-reg supervision and the ability to support colleagues at all levels of experience is required.

An innovative and flexible approach to working is key to success in the delivery of this role.

Main duties of the job

To undertake the role of professional and clinical lead for optometry services

To be responsible for the day to day operational management of the full range of clinical optometry services provided at Queen’s Medical Centre.

To support and deputise for the Head of Department on matters relating to Optometry and to take responsibility and accountability for the delivery of a range of highly complex specialist optometric services, which meet the changing needs of the Ophthalmology Department

To work closely with the Head of Department in the management of financial, human resources and information systems within the Optometry department.

To personally deliver a comprehensive range of core optometric services and a broad range of extended roles to the highest standards of quality and care.

To work as an autonomous practitioner in providing optometric assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly and who have varying communication skills.

To contribute to the recruitment, training and appraisal of Optometrists, undertake wellbeing interviews and other HR issues.

To be a registered supervisor with the College of Optometrists for Pre-registration Optometrists.

To lead on the organisation of teaching and training at undergraduate and post-graduate level for various disciplines visiting Optometry.

Working for our organisation

The successful candidate will be working with the multidisciplinary team in the Ophthalmology Department comprising of Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Technicians, OSPs, the nursing and admin teams.

Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient and outpatient facilities. It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service. We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics.

  • Degree in optometry
  • Registration with the GOC

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experienced in hospital optometry with clinical experience at band 7 or above
    • Extensive experience of a wide range of core and extended clinical roles within hospital optometry
  • Proven operational management experience in hospital optometry
  • Evidence of leadership experience and supporting others in a clinical environment
  • Involvement in delivering requirements of corporate and clinical governance
