Consultant Immunologist

Applications are invited for a replacement Consultant Post in Immunology at Nottingham University NHS Trusts, to join a well-established and friendly team. The post is 10 PAs although applications will also be considered on Less Than Full Time basis. The post is available now.

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) provides a comprehensive laboratory diagnostic and advisory service with strong links with other specialties within the Trust and also provides research support for the Trust and University departments. Laboratory Services are based at the Queens Medical Centre Campus. The immunology laboratory provides services to NUH, University Hospital Leicester, Kings Mill Hospital and Derby Hospitals and also provides Consultant input (non-sessional) to Kings Mill Hospital (UKAS accredited). It has an extensive repertoire of tests, with on-going development. There is a large autoimmune section to support the superregional vasculitis clinical service.

The Clinical Immunology and Allergy department sees over 3000 adult patients in clinic a year plus patients in immunotherapy, Omalizumab and day case settings. There are 145 patients on Immunoglobulin replacement (74 adults on home therapy, 21 children on home therapy, 45 adults on hospital administration, 5 children on hospital administration).

Main duties of the job

The role of this post is to support the laboratory service, to provide high quality laboratory liaison and interpretation/reporting of specialist tests and provide quality support and leadership. The post will support the development of the laboratory service enabling widening of the repertoire and incorporating new technologies. The successful candidate will join a team of Immunologists, Clinical Scientists and BMS staff within the laboratory service. The post will provide Clinical Immunology and Allergy clinics in conjunction with Clinical Immunology and Allergy colleagues and Clinical Nurse Specialists and will provide some support to the Paediatric Immunology Service. The team has excellent links with regional colleagues and are members of TRIAC (Trent Regional Immunology and Allergy Consortium) network. The position will be based at Queens Medical Centre Campus. NUH has specific links with respiratory, genetics and ENT departments to support referrals as required and the department also works alongside a dietician with specialist interest in allergy and liaison pharmacist.

The centre provides higher specialist training in Immunology. The department has QPIDS (Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services) and IQAS (Improving Quality Allergy Services) accreditation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Summary of Duties:

(a) Provision with consultant colleagues for the proper functioning of the Immunology Laboratory with a specific role on the clinical validation and interpretation and reporting of immunology results, trouble shooting and laboratory liaison with clinicians from other specialities.

(b) The post holder will participate in the provision of a clinical service in the diagnosis and management of patients with immunology and allergy disease.

(d) cover for colleagues » annual leave and other authorised absences.

(e) professional supervision and management of STPs, Clinical Scientists, junior medical and nursing staff.

(f) responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.

(g) participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.

(h) involvement in research, as appropriate to job plan

(i) managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.

Governance and Audit

Each consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence-Based Practice. Each directorate has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.

Essential criteria

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • At least 5 years in accredited Immunology training posts
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

Clinical skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within the speciality and make decisions at consultant level.

Desirable criteria

  • Substantial experience in development and delivery of a high quality clinical and laboratory service.

Management skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
  • Able to develop, present and deliver coherent service development.
  • Able to delegate appropriately. Able to work within a team.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of previous managerial responsibility and / or management training.
  • Organisational and political awareness.
  • Evidence of involvement in effective NHS service development
