McHenry County Division of Transportation has an opening for a full time Highway Maintenance Worker/Mechanic. This position will operate a variety of instruments such as hand, electric and air-driven tools to test, service and repair vehicles and other mechanical equipment. This position will also inspect, adjust and replace parts to repair and maintain vehicles and equipment. Repairs brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and/or related work. Changes tires and tubes, cuts and welds metal and performs fabrication and minor repairs.
In addition to the above responsibilities, this position will also perform other duties as assigned. Participates in other general highway maintenance activities, will assist in winter operations snow and ice removal on the County Highway system.
Hourly wage: $29.50/hour This is a union position under Local 150. Hourly wage is not negotiable.
Winter Hours: 7:00am – 3:30pm
Summer Hours: 6:00am – 2:30pm
Job Requirements:
- Applicants must have a valid Class “B” CDL license with air brake endorsement and the ability to obtain a Class “A” CDL with tanker endorsement within one year of employment.
- 1-3 year of current automotive and equipment repair.
Required Skills:
In order to be successful in this position candidates must have the ability to:
- Perform strenuous physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions (24 hours a day).
- Working knowledge of automotive truck and equipment parts along with diesel engine operation and maintenance, welding and fabrication of heavy machinery, tractors and all type of small engine repairs.
Desired Skills:
- Snow removal and highway maintenance experience is desired.
- General computer skills and mechanical knowledge is desired.

- High School Diploma or GED
