Chiltern Railways operate between the West Midlands and London, providing journey options to Aylesbury, Oxford, Birmingham, Stratford-Upon-Avon and other destinations. The HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment) team support this in providing a safe railway environment to all its stakeholders, including the public and employees.

The HSSE Auditor role is a crucial part of the team, being responsible for the HSSE audit programme within Chiltern Railways. To successfully deliver a robust audit programme, the role holder will coordinate and conduct audits based around our internal management systems for HSSE and the externally accredited systems that we maintain. The principal purpose of the HSSE Auditor is to protect Chiltern Railways, including it’s people, it’s customers and other stakeholders, from legal and reputational risk that may arise from non-compliance, and to drive continual improvement for our HSSE arrangements. This means that the role holder will need to use a coaching and consultative approach.

The HSSE Auditor will also be required to support and collaborate with the wider HSSE Team and support the team in the delivery of the HSSE Plan in accordance with business and National Rail Contract needs.

Accountable for the development and implementation of a risk based internal audit programme for the HSSE arrangements within Chiltern Railways
Undertake HSSE compliance audits (either on site, remotely, or blended) in line with the audit programme and to any applicable standards (e.g. RM3, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and ISO 9001)
Conduct interviews and carry out observations to gather information about internal risk controls, management procedures and other key aspects of Chiltern Railways’ operations
Ensure the accuracy, quality and delivery of all audit reports and additional materials, in line with agreed timescales
Provide coaching to colleagues and teams to help them address non-conformities and areas for improvement
Review external audit reports and prepare summaries and internal action plans for colleagues and their teams
Prepare audit reports for the Head of HSSE and the senior management team
Ensure effective communication arrangements are in place with union representatives when cascading audit reports
Develop suitable systems for the tracking and close out of any corrective actions
Attend internal meetings as the HSSE audit SME, and other meetings as deemed necessary by the Head of HSSE
Collaborate with other SMEs, teams and unions in Chiltern Railways as required
Collaborate with and attend external meetings with the regulator, industry bodies and other TOCs as required
Auditing experience and knowledge of occupational health and safety, and environmental, management systems
Auditing and knowledge of international standards, e.g. ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and ISO 9001
Internal auditing qualification
Possess interpersonal skills, integrity and commercial awareness to maintain excellent working relationships at all levels
Experienced user of Microsoft packages – these include Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
Able to communicate clearly and concisely in written, numeric and verbal form
Be supportive, influential and willing to share knowledge
Able to manage own workload and prioritise
Highly motivated
Strong desire for continual improvement with a commercial and strategic focus
Ability to influence staff and managers at all levels on-business specific matters

Desirable Criteria:
Lead auditor qualification
NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
Environmental qualification (IEMA foundation or equivalent)
Knowledge of railway operations
